The former head coach of Spartak Moscow, Italian Massimo Carrera, reacted to the decision of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to remove all Russian clubs and teams from participation in international tournaments in the 2022/23 season.

Carrera told SE that he was very sorry that Russia came under UEFA sanctions. “The Russian teams didn't deserve this. I really look forward to Spartak returning to the European arena. Of course, I believe that sport should remain out of politics. I hope the measures against Russian football will end soon,” said the Italian specialist, who worked in Russia at Spartak from 2016 to 2018.

On Monday, May 2, the UEFA Executive Committee decided to remove all Russian football from international competitions under its auspices. So, Russian clubs were left without European cups for the 2022/23 season and will not be able to play in the Champions League and the Europa League, the Russian team led by Valery Karpin lost the League of Nations, the women's team was left without Euro, and the RFU returned back the application for the European Championships 2028 and 2032, considering it unacceptable. In addition, beach and futsal suffered.

The Russian Football Union stated that it categorically disagrees with UEFA's decisions. The RFU will continue to deal with sanctions at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.
