The introduction of SCA (Strong Customer Authentication) or strong customer authentication, is a regulatory change introduced in the current legislation that regulates the provision of payment services and electronic payment transactions. The change implies a reinforcement in the security of purchases made over the Internet and mainly affects the way in which some of the transactions were validated until now (a key sent to the customer’s mobile was used) and introduces a process reinforced and even safer for customers.

Will this change apply to all purchases?

No, there will be purchases that do not require authentication, either due to their low amount, their risk of fraud or the application of some exemption allowed by the regulations.

And now what am I going to have to do to be able to continue shopping online with my card?
First of all, you need to have your Digital Banking contract active. If you don’t have passwords or don’t remember them, you can manage it here.

If you have the Santander App, you can confirm your purchases with Santander Key* simply using your fingerprint or facial recognition.

Using it is as easy as paying in physical stores:

When making a purchase that requires authentication, you will receive a message on your mobile, touch it to access Santander Key.
Check the purchase data, and if they are correct, confirm it by validating with your fingerprint, facial recognition or password.
Much easier, right?

To enjoy the best online shopping experience, make sure you have the latest version of the Santander App, identify the device as secure and have notifications activated. Otherwise, you will receive an SMS on your mobile phone with a link that you will have to access to verify your identity by entering your access code to online banking or the Santander App.

*In order to confirm operations with fingerprint or facial recognition, you will need a mobile terminal with biometrics. If you don’t have it, you can continue operating with your access code.

ATTENTION: Banco Santander will never ask you for other information to authenticate your identity in online purchases: no identity document, no address, no date of birth, no signature code, no mobile number, etc.
